The weather on Hatteras Island in the fall can be mild, although it changes quite a bit from September through November.
September can still feel very much like summer. Average daytime temperatures start around the low 80s and gradually cool into the upper 70s as the month progresses. It is often a great time for swimming, boating, and enjoying the water.
October is one the best months of the year for enjoying the Outer Banks outdoors. Typical daytime temperatures are in the upper 70s early in the month and settle into the upper 60s by the end of October, while nighttime temperatures can become noticeably cooler.
By November, you'll want to bring some layers. Average highs generally fall from the upper 60s toward the low 60s, with cooler evenings and mornings.
Fall also tends to bring more wind and as the season progresses, which is great news for Hatteras Island's wind-sport enthusiasts! Average wind speeds increase through October and November. The ocean water temperature near Hatteras Island remains swimmable through October averaging in the mid 70's- but if you are staying on the Pamlico Sound, which can be quite shallow in areas, those temperatures will be even warmer.
