Booking Your Hatteras Island Vacation? Here's What to Know About Vrbo's New Fees

Planning a family vacation to Hatteras Island is an investment in making memories together. Whether you're gathering the whole family for a reunion, celebrating a milestone, or simply enjoying a week at the beach, you want your vacation budget to go as far as possible.

That's why we want to share an important update about booking vacation rentals through Vrbo and explain how booking directly with Hatteras Island Vacation Rentals can help you avoid third-party fees.

What's Changing with Vrbo?

Beginning October 29, 2026, Vrbo is introducing a new 12% commission structure for vacation rental hosts. This replaces previous host fee arrangements, and Vrbo's traveler service fee will continue to apply to guests in most cases.

These are two separate fees charged by Vrbo:

  • Vrbo's traveler service fee: An existing fee charged to guests who book through Vrbo. The amount varies depending on the reservation.
  • Vrbo's host commission: A new fee Vrbo also charges for bookings made through the platform. This new fee will increase the cost of booking through Vrbo.

As vacation rental owners and managers, we don't control Vrbo's fee structure or the traveler service fee it charges at checkout.

While booking platforms offer a fast and convenient way to discover vacation homes, their fees can add a substantial amount to the total cost of a trip, particularly when booking a large home for a week with family and friends.

How Can These Fees Add Up to Thousands of Dollars?

Let's consider a hypothetical example of a weeklong stay in a large Hatteras Island Vacation home.

Imagine the rental cost for your family's week at the beach is $15,000 before taxes and other applicable charges.

If a booking platform's traveler service fee were 10% of that amount, the fee alone would be $1,500.

Example Booking Cost                                 Amount

Weekly rental cost                                           $15,000

10% traveler service fee                                  $1,500

New 12% commission                                     $1,800

Total cost when booking on Vrbo                $18,300

This is an illustration based on Vrbo's new policy, not a quote or representation of Vrbo's exact fee for a particular reservation. Actual traveler service fees vary, and the final total may include other fees and taxes.

In this example, if a guest were to book their home direct, it would cost them $15,000.  If that guest books that same home on Vrbo, it would cost them $18,300 - an additional $3,300.

For a large vacation home, the new percentage-based Vrbo fee costs guests thousands of additional dollars. That's money your family could otherwise put toward meals out, local activities, fishing trips, or simply enjoying more of what Hatteras Island has to offer.

How Does a Guest Book Direct?

Guests typically book direct by internet searching for the home they wish to book, and making the reservation via the home's direct booking web site.

And remember, the host commission and the traveler service fee are separate. The 12% host commission is automatically charged to every booking made on the Vrbo platform. The only way to avoid paying these fees is to book direct.
