A Village with Deep Roots: From Kinnakeet to Avon
Long before the village became known as Avon, it was called Kinnakeet, a Native American name meaning "that which is mixed". For generations, the people of Kinnakeet relied on the sea for their livelihood. Fishing, waterfowl hunting, boatbuilding and shipping were part of everyday life on this narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pamlico Sound.
The village officially became Avon in 1883 when a U.S. Post Office was established in the village. While the name changed, the community's heritage did not. Today, reminders of Kinnakeet can still be found throughout town and the original name still lives on in local landmarks like the Little Kinnakeet Life Saving Station.
Even as tourism has grown over the past decades, Avon has kept much of the character that makes Hatteras Island special. Its still a place where neighbors know one another, fishermen head out before sunrise, and visitors return year after year.
